Housing policy is very forward thinking in Freiburg. Not only do they have some of the most energy efficient houses in Europe, they also have whole new cities that are dedicated to green living and working. One district, Vauban, is a model of sustainability, where people live very close to urban transport, many of them don’t own cars, and where solar houses and low energy living are very common.
Transportation policy is very clear in Freiburg – reward public transport users at all times. Users are given extremely cheap transport, clean trams and high frequency services, all connecting with transport hubs in the cities.
Building Groups (which promote community living) cycle lanes, community planning initiatives, public transport and solar villages are extremely well thought out.
Rieselfeld is probably one of europes best examples of a properly planned, well executed village that is also a great place to live.
