WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT

Location: Vancouver & Portland
Date: June 05
Client(s): Office for the Deputy Prime Minister/ London Thames Gateway Development Corporation
Study Highlights: Ziba Design,City Mayor, Vancouver Transportation Authority,The Oregonian

London Thames Gateway Development Corporation commissioned Inspire Nation to lead a series of studies to successful waterfront developments.

Vancouver has one of the world's most interesting cityscapes. Everything on the waterfront, from the high-rise towers and townhouse developments, schools, parks and the seawall have all been carefully planned to make the city a vibrant place to live and work. Interestingly, it is the developers – and not the city – that have paid for most of this .

The Inspire Nation delegation met with masterplanning experts and city developers to learn why this happened, and how city planning can be a powerful change management tool. Delegates also met with City Manager, Judy Rodgers, to learn about Vancouver’s exciting plans and preparations for the 2010 Olympics, which include major changes to the city’s infrastructure.

In Portland, a vibrant new city district is being developed at South Waterfront - a run down, former industrial area. The new urban neighbourhood will be connected with the city via aerial and streetcar tram systems. The London delegation met with the main developers of South Waterfront, and with the city leaders who are financing the roads, bike paths, trams and other infrastructure of the area.

"By the late 1990s, Vancouver had established a reputation in North America for its planning achievement, especially for its creation of a participative, responsive, and design-led approach to urban regeneration and redevelopment." John Punter, Author of The Vancouver Achievement
